Photographed in the late 1960s, this panoramic view of Perugia reflects Irving A. J. Lawres’ ability to find harmony within layered landscapes. Warm evening light settles across terracotta rooftops, stone facades, and cypress-lined terraces, gradually giving way to the cool blues of the Umbrian mountains. Rather than pursue a postcard-perfect composition, Lawres chose a perspective that reveals the city as a living organism—historic, intricate, and deeply connected to the land around it.
Guided by his “Tyranny of Rules” philosophy, he allowed natural color and atmosphere to shape the image, creating a scene that feels both intimate and expansive.
