Viewed from high altitude, "Salt Pattern II" transforms the salt evaporation ponds north of San Francisco into a quiet study of line, curve, and tone. Narrow levees trace slow, meandering paths through pale fields of evaporating water, their sinuous shapes resembling abstract brushstrokes laid across a muted canvas. Subtle shifts in color—soft creams, silvery grays, and hints of ochre—suggest varying stages of evaporation and mineral density. Photographed around 1960, the image reflects Irving Lawres’ fascination with pattern found in working landscapes, where industrial processes yield unexpectedly lyrical and modern compositions when seen from above.
