Seen from above, this aerial study of the salt evaporation ponds north of San Francisco reduces the working landscape to a nearly minimalist composition. A single pond, tinted a soft blush pink by mineral concentration and algae, sits contained within dark, curving levees that snake across a field of pale, muted water. The geometry feels both deliberate and organic—engineered boundaries softened by time, sediment, and slow-moving currents. Photographed around 1960, the image exemplifies Irving Lawres’ ability to find abstraction in industrial processes, transforming utilitarian infrastructure into a quiet meditation on color, shape, and balance.
