This aerial photograph captures a serpentine network of salt evaporation ponds north of San Francisco, viewed from high altitude. Pale, silvery water fills the basins, while dark, looping levees carve sinuous paths that echo natural river bends despite their engineered purpose. Subtle tonal shifts—soft pinks, grays, and greens—give the scene a hushed, almost dreamlike quality. The composition feels both abstract and precise, transforming an industrial landscape into a study of rhythm, flow, and restrained color. Photographed around 1960, the image reflects Irving Lawres’ eye for finding quiet modernist abstraction within large-scale human interventions on the land.
